The Henry Moore Institute in Leeds is a unique resource devoted exclusively to sculpture, with a programme comprising exhibitions, collections and research. The Institute hosts a vibrant programme of sculpture exhibitions throughout the year, supported by talks, guided tours and conferences. Admission to all exhibitions is free of charge.
The Centre was established by the Henry Moore Foundation as a partnership with Leeds City Council in 1982. In 1993 it moved from Leeds City Art Gallery to the newly converted Henry Moore Institute next door. Whereas the Henry Moore Foundation at Moore's home in Perry Green in Hertfordshire devotes its activities exclusively to the work of Henry Moore himself, in Leeds the Institute is concerned with sculpture in general; both historic and contemporary and of any nationality.
The Institute is responsible for looking after sculpture collections of Leeds Museums & Galleries and for the Library & Archive collections in its own building. Because Leeds City Art Gallery has an outstanding collection of British 20th century sculpture, the Institute aims to build on this strength in the development of its complementary collections, making Leeds a significant site for anyone interested in understanding the sculpture of our time.
These collections range from the finished sculpture, through the interim model and the preparatory sketch, to printed and documentary material, and document the activities of sculptors from the very famous, through the successful professional, to the anonymous craftsperson. The collection of 20th century sculpture is on semi-permanent display in the Henry Moore Sculpture Galleries of Leeds City Art Gallery. The display includes most of the major names, including Jacob Epstein, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth as well as many who are less well known. The Study Galleries, which adjoin the bridge to the Institute are usually used to show small scale pieces. General Information:
