maerydoll -> My Christmas Party (2 Dec. 2009 20:33:13 )

As I am now retired, there will not be a Staff christmas doo. Dave's work is having one later in the month through in Glasgow but only for employees, no parners invited. As he will not be in a state to drive back, he has booked a room in the hotel for the night and hopes he has sobered up enough to drive back the next EVENING.

I have countered that by going to a roundiview with another 8 Hibs ladies fans locally for a wee drink on Saturday. We meet around every 2 months but for this meeting we have opened it up as a West Lothian Christmas Party and invited all Hibs supporrters living in West Lothian and district and none of the male supporters are brave enough to join us, and they know us all.[:D]

Then we heard today that the village is lighting their village Christmas lights on Saturday and the wee inn we had organised our "night oot " will be packed oot. We have asked for a wee side room but still waiting for an answer.

Hopefully my Christmas doo won't be cancelled

I really do hope it won't be! There seems to be a lot of partygoing going on up in bonnie old Scotland! I've never been there myself, I'm sorry to say, but sure would like to. I'm a train enthusiast and I've heard that the stretch from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Ron Hann -> RE: My Christmas Party (6 Dec. 2009 8:02:38 )

I've never travelled that stretch of track but I've seen a number of videos of it and it looks to be pretty terrific.

I think that steam traction is used periodically on those trains. too.

Anders -> RE: My Christmas Party (6 Dec. 2009 15:31:55 )

Ron, old chap, I counted on you to comment on what I wrote, since it was partly about train rides. It's funny in a rather nice way, how well all of us frequent users get to know each other and our respective interests and specialities. Are any of the videos you mention available on line on the net?

Guest -> RE: My Christmas Party (6 Dec. 2009 17:02:23 )

I have taken the train on that strech of track, its wonderful.

Fair comments, there, Anders.

About the video, I really wouldn't know. I've picked them up from sources various, usually from a chain of El Cheapo shope which we have here that soecialise in everything.

I can arrange to get them copied if you would like.

I've also got a dvd of a train trip away up your way. too.

It's something about a Midnight Sun Express which heads away up above the Arctic Circle [summer only, I should imagine]. I haven't watched it for a while, but I think that it may be of Norwegian origin.

I think, from memory, that it ends up near some mining area.

If you're interested, I'll look it out for you.

Anders -> RE: My Christmas Party (9 Dec. 2009 15:50:04 )

Ron, I know the one you're talking about in my part of the world, at least if it's the one I think it is. If it is, I've travelled the full length of it, both north bound and south bound. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's called the "Inlandsbanan". It is sometimes referred to as the Swedish equivalent to the Trans Siberian. Amongst other things, you pass the arctic circle.

I thank you for the offer to have the videos copied for me, but please don't bother, I couldn't really ask you to do that much.

BTW, thank you very much for the Christmas card which arrived two days ago. That's a nice custom you have, and I've noticed that also peole from the US have the same custom, of including a "year report" from the year that we're just about to leave behind. That is something I have never come across before.

Ian, I can understand that you have travelled that stretch, since it's way up on your doorstep almost, not quite, but still. I read about it in a guide book once, and been wanting to check it out myself ever since.

Well Anders we could both travel on the train and take the one from Inverness to Mallag too. The 'Harry Potter' route over the viaduct.
Yes when going to Skye from Inverness I spent most of the time taking pictures.
Its indeed one of the most wonderful scenery in Scotland.

Clare -> RE: My Christmas Party (10 Dec. 2009 15:22:36 )

I can second (or third is it?) that - we went up to Gairloch in the Highlands in 2008 - fantastic scenery!

Ron Hann -> RE: My Christmas Party (11 Dec. 2009 8:09:11 )

Anders, I've laid my hands on the Scandinavian railway dvd.

It's called "The Polar Express' and covers a 5-day tour of Sweden, starting, and finishing, at Stockholm.

It is a while since I have viewed the disc in question but I have a sneaky feeling that the train starts off being steam-hauled.

No, I take that last remark back. I've just done a quick look at the first 5 minutes, or so, of the disc and found that the train is powered by spitzen-sparkzen power.

I must be thinking of two other similar discs.

I have only travelled from Livingston to Auctiabuey (sp?) via Inverness by car and the scenery was beautiful.

My daughter went to stay with an old school pal for 2 weeks in the Knoydart Estate and she said the scenery was fantastic from the Glasgow to Mallaig train, remarkable from a 12 year old! Then she had to get the estates boat over to knoydart. The only other way to it is a trek of about 13 miles over the hills from the nearest road going north.On the way back Dave drove up to meet her off the boat at Mallaig, and he also said the views were magnificent.BTW Mhairi was sick all the way home and the next day I took her to the doctors as she had spots on her hands,feet and throat and it turned out to be the human form of Foot and Mouth disease[:)]

Well, I'm sure that there's a lesson to be learned, just there....

But I can't just make up my mind what it is..... [:D][:D][:D]

And that, I presume, is a case, albeit a serious one, of "Many a true word spoken in jest" ??

Ron Hann -> RE: My Christmas Party (25 Dec. 2009 7:18:06 )

I received this from our lad resident in China.

It just goes to show how these things get around.

Subject: Merry Christmas

'Twas the night before Christmas and Santa's a wreck...How to live in a world that's politically correct?His workers no longer would answer to "Elves","Vertically Challenged" they were calling themselves.

And labor conditions at the north pole
Were alleged by the union to stifle the soul.
Four reindeer had vanished, without much propriety,
Released to the wilds by the Humane Society.

And equal employment had made it quite clear
That Santa had better not use just reindeer.
So Dancer and Donner, Comet and Cupid,
Were replaced with 4 pigs, and you know that looked stupid!

The runners had been removed from his sleigh;
The ruts were termed dangerous by the E.P.A.
And people had started to call for the cops
When they heard sled noises on their roof-tops.

Second-hand smoke from his pipe had his workers quite frightened.
His fur trimmed red suit was called "Unenlightened."
And to show you the strangeness of life's ebbs and flows,
Rudolf was suing over unauthorized use of his nose

And had gone on Geraldo, in front of the nation,
Demanding millions in over-due compensation.
So, half of the reindeer were gone; and his wife,
Who suddenly said she'd enough of this life,

Joined a self-help group, packed, and left in a whiz,
Demanding from now on her title was Ms.
And as for the gifts, why, he'd ne'er had a notion
That making a choice could cause so much commotion.

Nothing of leather, nothing of fur,
Which meant nothing for him. And nothing for her.
Nothing that might be construed to pollute.
Nothing to aim. Nothing to shoot.

Nothing that clamored or made lots of noise.
Nothing for just girls. Or just for the boys.
Nothing that claimed to be gender specific.
Nothing that's warlike or non-pacific.

No candy or sweets...they were bad for the tooth.
Nothing that seemed to embellish a truth.
And fairy tales, while not yet forbidden,
Were like Ken and Barbie, better off hidden.

For they raised the hackles of those psychological
Who claimed the only good gift was one ecological.
No baseball, no football...someone could get hurt;
Besides, playing sports exposed kids to dirt.

Dolls were said to be sexist, and should be passe;
And Nintendo would rot your entire brain away.
So Santa just stood there, disheveled, perplexed;
He just could not figure out what to do next.

He tried to be merry, tried to be gay,
But you've got to be careful with that word today.
His sack was quite empty, limp to the ground;
Nothing fully acceptable was to be found.

Something special was needed, a gift that he might
Give to all without angering the left or the right.
A gift that would satisfy, with no indecision,
Each group of people, every religion;

Every ethnicity, every hue,
Everyone, everywhere...even you.
So here is that gift, it's price beyond worth...
"May you and your loved ones enjoy peace on earth."
