Quenton -> UK Set for big Population Increases (21 Oct. 2009 15:57:08 )

This BBC article

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8318010.stm

reveals that the UK is set for big population increases over the next few years - mainly due to net inward migration.

What does everyone think - is this a good thing? Or is Britain already too crowded? It's certainly one of the most densely populated countries on the planet right now.

And how will this affect our CO2 targets? These have already been set by the government - so presumably a big increase in population will mean a big decrease in the amount of CO2 everyone can emit per head - and a significant impact on UK lifestyles.

I don't think that I would worry too much about that, Quenton.

There are a good many Countries around he globe whose population is a darn sight more dense that that in the U.K.

When they say 'increased population', I am forced to wonder if they just mean legitimate immigrants or are they counting all the free-loaders who come in by various means - like underneath trucks or hiding in rail-wagons ??

And, I don't care what Country you might happen to discuss, I fail to see how every mile of coastline can be supervised 24/7.

Also, I often wonder about private aviation - there are many smaller airfields in the U.K., as in many other Countries, where light 'planes could land with extra passengers.

I would say as long as they can all afford the UK's proposed 'Green Taxes', it should all work out OK. If they migrate in a manner which means they are the beneficiaries of multiple handouts, then I would have to consider the prospect of a house on Mars.[6]

I guess in the eyes of you and me, nice living environment is most important, which might be second to the economoy driver - population in the eyes of the government.
