Status: offline 		I finally got around to reading the currant Britain magazine. I found an ad for a market at the Southbank Centre that starts right before I get to London. " A German style Christmas Market with app. 45 wooden chalets" I am thrilled. I have always wanted to go to one and know there is a good one in Bath. I don't have the time to go there so I am hoping this one is just as good and fun.

Anyone from London area been there?? (the same company has them in Canterbury and Glasgow). I just have to cross the bridge from my hotel so I am definitely going.

Status: offline 		Should be good. There was one in Edinburgh last year - and it was fun. Very atmospheric.

Status: offline 		I saw when I was on visitlondon.com that there is also a holiday market in Hyde Part. This one has the chalets and rides plus all sorts of entertainment. Now I have a choice

Status: offline 		I have found another market with rides, again advertised as a German market. This one is at the O2. I guess I really have a choice. I suppose it all depends on the weather, but I think the one in Hyde Park will be my destination.

BTW - I leave in one week

Marie - only a week to go! I bet you're "dead excited" (as they would say in my native Nottingham!).

I think you'll have a great time - the Christmas stuff will just be starting up - the Christmas markets will be great - we really loved the Edinburgh one last year - so festive!

Have a wonderful time - keep us updated! Will you have Internet access in your hotel???

Status: offline 		the last time I stayed at The Strand, I was upgraded. The room had internet, though I still had to pay for it, otherwise there is a computer in the lobby that works with a credit card. So I will check in a bit.

However, the ultimate "trip reporter" and his better half may show up in London ( or we will meet up somewhere in the UK ) So I know you all will get some kind of "instant" report on what I am up to.

To say I am excited is an understatement. I am so ready for this trip on so many levels. I can't wait

Status: offline 		The O2 is in Greenwich. It was built as the Millennium Dome, later it was named O2 (don't know why) it is now a huge entertainment complex with theatres, exhibit rooms, loads of restaurants. it is quite an impressive structure. http://wwp.millennium-dome.com/

The O2 (formerly the Millennium Dome as you say) is named after the mobile phone company O2 who now run it.

To me, O2 means something in Physics, I think. An Oxygen molecule, basically.

It's 55 years, at least, since I did anything like that.

Emily and I went to a really good Christmas Market in Manchester at the weekend. It was in front of the Town Hall. Lots of wooden chalet-type stalls with everything for sale:
Christmas decorations, leather goods (handbags, wallets etc), jewellery, wooden children's toys, scarves and hats, and German food - salami, frankfurters etc...

Emily said she'd never seen so much salami in one place before! They were handing out samples so Emily tried the cheese salami (very tasty) and the garlic version (yuk, apparently!)

So we'd recommend the Christmas Market in Manchester in front of the town hall. We actually went twice - once during the afternoon on Friday and once in the evening (about 8pm) on Saturday.

It was a bit too crowded for Emily on the Saturday evening - lots of people crowding into the bier keller! Everyone was good natured and friendly but it was too much of a crush for someone who's not yet 4 feet tall!

Status: offline 		I went to the German Christmas market in Edinburgh about 5 years ago but as I was skint, I didn't enjoy it as much as the one in Cologne in 1970 but , off subject, that didn't compare to the grand time that I had there for Festival Week, the week before Lent, and espescially the Parade on the Tuesday.

Edinburgh has a parade and firework display before the Festival opens and end. It is nothing to compare with the celebrations of Festival week in Cologne.
