At last I am back in England after 6 years of living in Australia. It;s so good to be back. Recession? What recession? The streets are packed and the mood is very upbeat where we are.

We're moved back to the surrounding villages of Rutland in Leicestershire. Has anyone been? It is a new area to me and it's just breathtaking. Except it's haymaking time so we're both suffering from hayfever just a little. Not complaining though. I can fully recommend Rutland Cottages.co.uk for self catering and price.

We would like to start our own picture library for friends without using Facebook. Anyone got any ideas? Ye Olde Buffer maybe or Anglo ????

You sound so happy so I think the word CONGRATULATIONS is in order!

I don't know very much about picture libraries but I sure would welcome some nice pics from your new area! Ye Olde seems to be the real expert on these matters around here, he'll know how to go about it.

Thanks to all. To say I sound happy is beyond belief. I am so fed up of people telling me that I am mad to return to the UK that everyday I now find myself asking them............have you lived abroad? If not, please go and try it. Sometimes we fail to appreciate what is right in front of us.
As for the UK being expensive, hey wake up.....it is half the price of living in Australia!

This week we went to Warwick Castle. Absolutely fantastic as is the town. Only problem is that the last Earl of Warwick emigrated to Adelaide in 1978 (why can't the government give housing benefit to the heritage homes of the UK(, and now the castle is owned by theme park corporate Merlin??? Come on. Quentin, what's going on???

Greeetings, Nadine.

Nice to hear that you have returned safely to the Land of Your Birth [I almost said "Fathers", there].

I am in no position to comment on your remarks about living costs in Australia v. ditto in the U.K., but can't help wondering if the Cost of Living is the biggest attraction, or otherwise, of any place where we choose to live.

Isn't it possible that there is a certain attraction [usually] which draws us back, irrespective of many other factors ??

I've lived in New Zealand for coming up 44 years but must admit to there still being a certain tug which periodically comes from that Island to the west of us. Having said that, of course, I will readily admit that the styles of living in each of those two Countries have a lot more commonalities than would apply between Australia and the U.K.

And of course there is also the fact that, in a case of emergency, I could be back in Adelaide in, if the connections worked O.K., about 5 or 6 hours, whereas you were looking at a gap of 20, or so, more hours on top of those figures.

Mind you, the smaller time difference can sometimes work against the persons involved, too. Some years ago, we knew a couple who married here in Christchurch, he was a New Zealander and she was from Australia [in fact I went to High School with her brother] and that couple just could not settle in either Country. They would have a few years in one and then go to the other and so on and so forth.

Now they were the sort of couple that should have, perhaps, settled in a "Neutral" Country, preferably one in which neither person had any connections.

I think that that eventually broke the marriage up. Pity, really.

Anyway, all of that is a prelude to wishing you both a very Happy Return to the U.K. and that I hope that evrything works out for you, just as you have hoped and planned.

Good Luck.

Hello all

Just reporting back really. Having been home for 9 weeks, there are two main observations to report. One is the weather has been fantastic! Very consistent, hardly any rain amazingly. Most days fine, some sun and reasonably warm still for October.
The second observation is that England is much safer. This is a sweeping, broad statement which I suppose people could dispute but mostly my main reference is made towards the general security of ID and bank accounts.
Trying to obtain any kind of credit is impossible without a credit rating. Not that we need to borrow money, luckily we brought some capital but just things like trying to get an electricity supply or telephone connection is quite hard. And if you do have a spare bob or two, big brother wants to know how you got it.
They say all the new regulations are in the the name of preventing terrorism and money laundering but Blimey Moses, ain't it the truth that you just don't have a private life anymore??? I don't mind if the government wants to know what I had for dinner. I perhaps mind a little if they want to know what time I went to bed.

Anyway, for what it's worth, having been away for 6 years, I can see huge improvements. The roads are better, traffic calming measures are great, England has great road signs that start long before you get to a junction, it looks a lot cleaner and a lot more, well designed, cleaner looking new housing.

I know people are unhappy with the current government but honestly, the UK looks much better and improved on my return. Only problem we had was finding a place to stay. I think everyone took holidays at home this year. Trust us to come back in the peak of the holiday season Got a nice place to live now though. Cheerio.
