After returning from yesterday's jaunt we discussed what to do for today. Marie said she would like to see Cambridge so that was where we were headed. After a straightforward drive of around 90 minutes we parked outside the city at one of the 'Park & Ride' car parks and caught the bus into the city.

We got off the bus in Bridge Street and walked along to the junction with Trinity Street. Opposite Trinity Street is the 12th century round church; one of only five in the country and built originally by the Crusaders as a copy of the church in Jerusalem.

Turning into Trinity Street we walked past a number of the old university colleges including a funny old chapel (NOTE: we walked PAST it) and kept going until we reached Silver Street which crosses the river. From the Silver Street bridge we had a good view of the Mathmatical Bridge which is part of Queens' College.

We went into Queens' College to have a look round including the Cloister Court. The cloisters can be seen under the half-timbered structure.

This is what the cloisters look like from the inside with two very suspicious looking characters walking towards the camera.

We walked across the mathmatical Bridge and along by the side of the river where there were some lovely flower displays.

After meandering around assorted narrow streets and looking at the punts on the river we found ourselves in the Market Place about lunchtime. We bought some take-away snacks and drinks and sat on the low wall outside King's College and had our lunch. We had our backs to Kings' College Chapel which was a good thing as the side that we could see was covered in scaffolding together with a large bright blue tarpaulin. Very attractive. Amanda and I decided we wouldn't go into Kings' College as although the chapel is spectacular we have seen it before and we don't think that a second look is worth five pounds each but Marie decided to go in otherwise she'd never hear the last of it. The chapel wasn't open until 1:30 PM today so we went round to the entrance to find a small crowd waiting for the gates to open. Marie did eventually get in and I'll leave her to tell you about her experience.

There is a church opposite Kings' College with a very tall tower which Amanda wanted to go up. I didn't because the weather conditions weren't good enough for me to take photographs and Marie didn't feel that she wanted to climb over a hundred steps so Amanda went up and Marie and I went to a branch of Whittards so that she could buy some tea.

Meanwhile back up the tower Amanda took a photograph of the Market Place. In the red circle are two people hoping to look anonymous by losing themselves in the crowd.

However they are completely out of luck from the point of view of anonymity as you can see from the next picture.

It just goes to show that you never really know who's spying on you even in a small, ancient city like Cambridge. As it was now well into the afternoon and we had yet to drive back to Colchester we caught the bus back to the car park and did just that. We delivered Marie to her cottage and made some plans for her last day. I'll tell you about those tomorrow.

Scaffolding??? How ABSOLUTELY disgusting

I HATE SCAFFOLDING...and on top of that, any blue tarp which is being used for said scaffolding What was Cambridge thinking?

'Course, looking at it from another angle, somebody once told me that Kings College Chapel was slowly wasting away. Maybe this means money has been found so the structure will make it to the 22nd century

Come on Marie...I'm awaitin' for a step by step narrative of you being inside that marvelous building I'm am SO glad you chose to go

I will most likely be banned from the forum for this, but.......

Kings College chapel is really impressive from the outside (there was scaffoling only on one side), tall and narrow. £5.50 to get in - that should help with repairs! The only interesting thing was the very high vaulted ceiling. Actually it too is impressive. I always marvel at the work that the builders managed to do way back then. I just thought it was long, narrow and high. Made me think that they started to build a cathedral and ran out of room. I am glad I saw it and it is nice but FOR ME it just did not hold me. I mush prefer the smaller village churches, maybe because they have nooks and crannies to peak into.

At least the spy camera got me with my blue bags from Whittards!

I will work on my trip report this weekend, jet lag has hit me bad. I did go to work this morning (woke up at 2am, did all my laundry, unpacked, paid bills.) I am sure I made some major mistakes at work, finally gave up when I could not do a tax report that I have done 100s of times.

No banning, Marie I'm just glad you went! What did you think of the rest of Cambridge?

My over-the-top liking for the chapel has a lot to do with the Tudor emblems everywhere, and most especially in the initials of Anne Boleyn Henry missed erasing on the choir screen. You know me and that family

Hope your jet-lag is over fairly quickly

Paid bills ????????????/

You mean that you still had some money left ??????????????

Oh, dear, what are the modern tourists coming to ???????

Tch, tch.

Never mind, it was good to read that you had a real good trip but it's a real pity about Lisa.

Liked the pictures, too. It looks like it wasn't even raining, as well.

Do you think that she will try again on another occasion ??

lisa will definitely go back to England, I have no doubt. It is just no fun travelling when your really don't feel well. This trip was just lousy timing.

And terrible timing for bills - they all come in the first week of the month so I had a pile waiting for me. This month the credit card bills have come in. . The good thing is Barry and Amanda kept me so busy, I really did not do any shopping - at least not for myself. My one indulgence (besides the tea) was a jar of Tiptree marmalade made right next door to Ye Olde. YUMMY
