We were going to take Marie and Lisa to Finchingfield and Thaxted today but Marie telephoned at 8 o'clock this morning to say that Lisa had had a bad night and definitely wasn't well. Lisa has decided to go back home tomorrow, Saturday, and she didn't feel well enough to come out with us today and was happy enough to be left at the cottage whilst we took Marie out.

So we went off to Finchingfield with Marie.

Yes I know it's a bit of a dump but it's all we've got. [:)] We arrived around 11:00 AM and went straight to the Tea Rooms for some tea and coffee. Once refreshed we walked round the corner to Duck End (part of Finchingfield) to show Marie some thatched cottages.

Pretty boring I know but we made her look at them and she just had to put up with it. We walked back past the windmill on our way to the church.

I had to explain to Marie how to tell that a door arch on the church was norman but you all know how to tell don't you? Of course you do.

There was a very nice medieval house by the church and after looking at that we walked along a footpath to the top end of the village green and made a bee line for the tea rooms again. Well it was lunch time.

After lunch we went off to Thaxted just a short drive away and I chanced to spot these two ladies in front of the Guildhall.

We went up Stoney Lane next to the Guildhall towards the church. Dick Turpin is said to have lived or worked in this lane. Hands up those who don't know who Dick Turpin is (Marie didn't).

That is a positively huge parish church and after having a look round we made our way past the Almshouses to John Webb's Windmill.

That was, more or less, the end of our sightseeing and we drove back to Colchester arriving at about 5:30 PM.

Now that Lisa wants to leave tomorrow there are no trains over the weekend from Colchester because of engineering works so we are taking Marie and Lisa, in the morning, to the nearest available station about 30 miles away to put them on a train to London.

Marie is going to London with Lisa to see her on to the the shuttle bus which will take Lisa to Heathrow and then Marie, after having a wander around, will come back to Colchester by train and bus later. We hope to resume normal sightseeing on Sunday.

Chaos continues. [;)]

Oh, how sad[:(] Lisa must really feel bad if she's cutting short a long-anticipated trip to England. I feel so awful for her [X(]. Here's hoping she has a good quick trip home.

Tea twice a day? Is that legal? Any scones and clotted cream along with the hot beverages? Doors into churches are norman? I thought they were 'sydney'[;)] As for Dick Turpin...yep, have heard of him...didn't he invent turpin-tine?[sm=propeller.gif]

The thatched cottages...was the thatch covered with wire? I've so often thought that thatched cottages looked better from a distance...but then I wasn't walking with a great guide and guide-ess.

Once Marie is on her own, will any of her plans change? Will she forego another day in London since she'll be there tomorrow?

And just WHEN (asked in a soft voice) will KINGS COLLEGE CHAPEL come into the picture?????????[:o]

What a ridiculous idea. Who ever heard of a church door called sydney. Frederick maybe or George perhaps but Sydney - Nah! [:)]

Thatch is always covered in wire these days unless you want birds to remove it piece by piece for their nests. The wire was hardly noticeable on the rooves that we saw. Really quite well disguised.

She is counting that as her day in London so she won't be going again.

That is still a possibility but it's going to be up to Marie. In any case if we did go to Cambridge I was going to post anything about that trip as I can't really think of anyone who'd be interested. [sm=bouncy.gif]

I do understand the principal...a roof that costs as much as those do really don't want to help provide shelter for birds. Most likely I was just caught by surprise because in photos, no wiring can be seen.

I think you left out N'T in that sentence, Ye. Here's hoping I talked up the chapel enough for Marie to still want to visit...and if she values her life she'll go[6] Hell hath no fury like a woman who doesn't have a U.S.friend visit her favorite place in England for her[;)]

P.S...well, my quote box certainly doesn't look as tidy as yours, Mr. Buffer. Someday maybe I'll get the hang of it!
