Ye Olde Buffer -> Chaos Anglaise - Day 1.5 (Thursday) (2 Apr. 2009 18:50:42 )

As I mentioned briefly in another thread Marie and Lisa arrived safely in Colchester yesterday around lunchtime and settled into their rented cottage. By about half-past six in the evening they had settled out again and then into the Rose and Crown Hotel.
The Rose and Crown is a nice medieval building and a 3 star hotel to boot so they weren't exactly slumming it. But why? You don't really expect things to go smoothly when those two are on the loose do you? [sm=banghead.gif]
This is where the story degenerates into toilet humour - well 'toilet' anyway although it wasn't particularly humerous because it wouldn't work - the toilet that is. The lady who lets the cottage promised a plumber for 4:00 PM but by 5:30 he hadn't turned up so, because they were feeling pretty shattered after their journey, they de-camped to the Rose and Crown for the night.
This morning we discovered that the plumber had fixed it sometime late yesterday so we drove to the Rose and Crown and took them, and their luggage, back to their cottage. The toilet was tested a number of times and found to be in perfect working order so we planned to spend an easy day walking around Colchester. [8D]
Here they are with plenty of time to spare outside Tymperley's a 15th century building housing a clock museum.

Then we walked nearly 2000 years to the Roman Balkerne Gate and the third lady is, of course, Amanda.

We didn't see any romans - I think they'd all gone for lunch which reminded us that it was indeed lunchtime so off we went to spend an hour feeding our faces. After our refreshment we toddled off down to the river where we saw some 17th century timber-framed cottages and then walked along by the river and up through Castle Park to the castle.

Here are the ladies again having just escaped from the castle dungeons.The castle now houses a museum of the various historical artifacts found locally including roman mosaics.
After that we walked down to the ruins of St. Botolph's Priory. It was a perfectly good building until Marie leaned on it - look at it now. [:o]

By now it was about four o'clock and I think they'd had enough on their first day so we all went back to their cottage where Amanda and I collected our car and went home.
Tomorrow, Friday, we are taking them to ... well you can wait and see!
