...and no trip to the UK for us yet again.

Unfortunately, the economy and the week $ is the culprit.

I guess it could be worse but I am longing for a trip.

Sigh!

Ah! Our summer is just beginning after a very cool few weeks. It's hard to imagine Oz as cold but in some parts it can to below 7 degrees at night.

Never mind Shannon, everything for a reason and a reason for everything.

If it's any consolation to you at all Shannon - and I realise it probably isn't! - you didn't miss any nice weather over here! It's been coolish, wet and windy all summer.

Hi Shannon, in certain parts of the UK, they have had it not so good, but truly up in Northumberland and Durham, its been a great summer .

As I write okay todays sky is grey, but its very warm....Ideal for a walk along the coast or out and about our scenic/historic sites.... Katie

Hi Shannon, the photo was taken up at Alnwick, apart from the historic Castle (wow!!) and grounds (brilliant) they have a large Tree House.

Thats it show in the photo, and to get an idea how big it is......phew!! you can take a meal in the Restaurant, buy some gifts or trinkets fom the shop inside. Take a walk around, some of the walkways going through the trees, its one of those attractions for all ages.
Then to top a visit off, a walk via the spectacular Fountain Gardens......perfect.......cheers Katie

7 Deg. C. at night ?? What's wrong with that (so long as you've got an electric blanket or other means of keeping warm).

Some days over the past couple of months, we've been scratching to get that as our maximum during the day.....

One is inclined to be rather glad that one is not a brass simian.

Anyway, the last day of winter and the first one of spring have both been very pleasant, weather-wise, and we should have got into double-figures for our maximum temperatures on each day.

Our summer here in Scotland only lasted one week in April and a few days since. the cental heating went on today!

Am I wrong in remembering the summer holidays from school in Edinburgh, running around in bare feet and Mum applying the Echo margarine to remove the tar where we had burst the tar bubbles? Those days seemed to be far hotter than now.

Boy that "tree house" is bigger than my house. Thx for the photo. Our summer finally ending and now until end of May 09 this is a wonderful place to be. The last three months have been pretty hot but it will be nice for a while now. I pick up my son from work at 6:30 am and the mornings are just perfect.

To return to your original post Shannon, the pound is currently plummeting against the dollar, I believe it's now at it's lowest level for about 5 years. So a trip to Britain might be coming back within the bounds of affordability for you and some of the other American forumites!

Mostly, we tend to remember pleasureable times.

Of course if something really drastic happened to us, we remember that as well, but mainly, to quote the words of the song "Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer".....

Human nature strikes again.

Which, of course, raises an interesting question - What are the earliest memories carried by Forum-ites ??

About the earliest that I can fairly accurately recall would be from about when I was 4, or perhaps a little earlier. I can definitely recall my first day at school and I would have been 5 then.

Prior to that, due to my mother being crook, I attended a Country, single-teacher school with my brother so I would have been less than 5 then.

Living in a 'Nissian Hut' my sister throwing a swing into a boy's face.
We both running along a long bench seat at the store {no supermarkets back then}
Moving house on the back of a coal lorry. Ah the 50s those were the days.
Being taken and left at the Eastern Hospital {now pulled down} to get my tonsils out.
No explanation from my caring mother.
Going to school which had a metal fence around it to keep children in.
I had not forgotten the hospital.
Miss Macdonald my first teacher.

Christmas freezing white Christmas and the best present, the coalman delivering coal on yes Christmas Day.

The weather has been very wet here in the Midlands over the past 24 hours, the River Severn & other rivers are in flood again & those areas affected by last years flooding are affected again. The forecast is not good for the next few days either.

Some of that rain made it over here . We had a BIG rain storm last night and this morning. Now hurricane or tropical storm (she hasn't made up her mind!) Hanna is due to hit us tonight. she should be an even bigger rain maker.

Celia and I are thinking of putting together a visit to UK in '10. She wants to go to Scotland (mostly Stirling) and I want to get to Isle of Man. Has anyone visited either?

Hey, Az Cowboy

News on Stirling Castle...if that's where Celia is thinking. The place will be closed for massive restoration work until 2011 I, too, would like to see that place, but it won't figure into any of my plans (what little there are of them ) for a long while.

I just MUST get over to GB next year. Goodness, gracious, me oh my...what a festival of treats England is putting forth what with it being the 500th anniversary of ol' Hal 8 stepping up to the plate...crown Love the fact that the pound is getting its comeuppance, finally, by the dollar. Any little bit helps.

OK...earliest memory...

First grade and being told by Miss Fox that the president had been killed. I was scared Didn't understand the consequences, but felt like something bad had happened.

Happiest memory? First grade and my first love named Jerry. Ah...young romance

Yes Ian, I remember living in the Nissen Hut(Lochinvar Camp) We had the end bedroom as we were a family of 4 and when my wee sister arrived, we were allocated a council house in West Pilton with a garden.

I also remember going to the Eastern General hospital at aged 5. Didn't know why, but woke up with a sore throat. I also had my tonsils removed. I didn't see my family until a week later. Those were the days!

Also remember the crowd of bairns from the street heading off to Silverknowes without an adult. We would have a juice bottle with diluted NHS orange juice and jammy pieces and the babies in prams had their milk bottles wrapped in the spare nappies to keep them warm. We'd head first of all to the tarzan swing at Gypsy Brae and then head for the beach at Silverknowes to play in the sand or even go swimming.

We'd go home when we were hungry.

Children now don't have the freedom that we had. We didn't have computers, game consels or even TVs but I'm sure we have fonder memories of our summers that the present child will have. Sadly
