I just have to ask if there is a finer meal? Even with Australian sausages (sorry Ron but the Aussies cannot beat UK bangers), I made dinner tonight with reasonably good pork sausages (our butcher tries very hard), a red wine and onion gravy and vegetables.
It was YUMMY!

It still has to be a UK favourite.

I remember our trip in 2004 for my 40th birthday, we had bangers and mash at a pub close to our hotel the first day we got there. I have had bangers and mash before and since but this place was sooooo great.

This part is kinda gross but what the heck....As we were leaving the pub to walk back to our hotel I burped. Steve asked if I was ok and I answered, "DELICIOUS"

Well, I guess that it's like all food subjects - some can make 'em, some can't.

And we won't make comparisons between the beers of the two Countries under discussion - it might upset a certain gentleman

The secret is in the gravy. You can disguise pretty much anything with good gravy.

I made mine with roasted, caramelised onions and red wine. Heaven!

I am afraid I don't like mashed potatoes, don't care much for gravy either...sorry may sound strange as most folk here in the UK eat them but not me.

Bet you're a roast beef and Yorkshire pudding man aren't you Anglo?

Maerydoll, I love Stovies but can't remember how you make it. Is it potatoes cooked in the fat and juices of rib of beef?

I must admit, since being in Australia, I love Asian food. It's so healthy too. I cook a lot of Thai stir fries these days. I imagine I'll bring this influence home with me and use it on my pomme friends. Not sure how they will like it. England mostly has Indian and Chinese but not so much Asian I don't think.

Nothing so strange in that, Anglo. Our elder lad couldn't abide those items. The number of howling matches that we had over THEM. !!!!!

Nowadays, he reckons that he doesn't mind them so much - so long as there's no lumps in them.

Mind you, that's the same descendent that didn't like, wait for it, jelly !!! Mind you he was rather partial to the ice-cream that went with it, though.

He just didn't seem to like anything soft. He wouldn't even eat banana cake or smoked fish in white sauce.

Ah, well, there's no accounting for taste.

Come to that, neither he nor his brother liked soup - of any sort. But that's another story.

EDBH, I umderstand that Stovies are potatoes, sausages or corned beef or beef mince, and onions cooked in beef dripping and then a wee touch of gravy mix added. I've never been able to make it properly.

The best Stovies can be bought at East Fortune market on a Sunday. yummie

Wasn't it Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren who had a record out with that title - mumble mumble years ago ??
