Hello all.

I'm not going home for Christmas after all. I'm going home to live! People in Australia think I'm mad for wanting to live in the cold, they think i need to see a doctor.
I can;t explain it to them in a way they can understand. But it's a roots thing, a connection to history and heritage.

Not sure on an exact time scale but hope it will be at the end of the year. We're renovating a house so we have to finish this first.

But it's all coming together quite fast actually. I can feel rain, snow, frost, black ice, freezing fog and a guiness and log fire coming on. I can't wait. Don't know how to contain myself. My husband says it's like living with little fireball of burning energy buzzing around.
He's excited too if he's being honest. It 30 years since he's been back to the UK so bit scary for him.
I'm just plain old bursting with enthusiasm for the old place. Oh hum, I guess I'll just have to be patient.

how could you do tis to Australia ??

I mean, just think of all the box-jelly-fish, sharks, snakes, crocodiles, red-back spiders and other denizens whom you've never met - and who have never met you....

Not to mention cyclones, dust-storms, floods and further climatic lovelies which you'll miss.....

Hmmm - perhaps you may be right, after all.

Oh, well, Good Luck with the venture.

I understand the "roots" thing.

When I tell people that I just moved here from California, they think I am nuts (well, I am but ).

At the end of the day, live where you will be happiest.

It's been very warm and humid here and Steve will say to me, "....and we moved here....why?"

I reply, "Because we are not on fire." <---- in reference of the California fires.

Good luck, EDBH and congratulations!

We now will have a place to stay , make sure you get a place with some extra bedrooms. That will be great for you EDBH, I think I recall that your daughter lives in England (am I right?)

Congrats, EDBH Would love all the details on this major move once it commences.

It's bad enough packing a house to go across the U.S. (right, Shannon?? ) But to pull up stakes and move an ocean away...what a grand experience!!!

Bill's sister lives in Chico, Shannon, and is a home care nurse based out of Paradise. She is not working now because the area around Paradise has become so dangerous with the wild fires. They evacuated the hospital and some of the nursing homes up there. Their priest said mass at a church up there last Sunday and he told them that it was so smokey in the Church that he couldn't see to the back of the Church.

Nadine, make sure you give us lots of details of your move.....

Nadine, it sounds like you'd better open your Reservations Log and start taking Bookings, already - even if you don't know where you will be living.

Well I think I know the location we'll be living. I just don't know how many bedrooms we'll have.
Still, the local pub will probably do us a good deal. Landlords are usually an OK bunch.

I'm in agony waiting. You know how you make a life changing decision but then it's a process? Well, we're at that stage.
I need one of those Stargate thingy's where you can just step from one life straight into the next.

I do admire you EDBH. Moving half way around the earth is a big step, even when you are going back "home" Just the logistics of it sets my head spinning. "Beam me up Scotty, along with all my possessions" would work for me.

Oh I am definately nervous and not looking forward to the big trip Marie. But neither can it happen fast enough.

There are differences this time though. When I first arrived in Australia 5 years ago, I didn't know what I was coming to. I don't know if you know what happened in my domestic situation (husband brought me here, emptied bank account, took off, long legal case, stranded with no money in a foreign country, etc, etc, etc) but anyway, I survived. Australia makes you pretty tough or at least there is a tougher attitude to life mostly shaped by a harsh climate. People here have had to be battlers to survive the odds.

At the time of finalising matters and getting my property settlement, I could not afford to return to England. With only half of my original assets, I didn't have enough money to go back to a reasonable lifestyle.
So instead I stayed and designed and launched a product that would buy my ticket home. I am a designer so I used all these skills to create a product that would sell like hot cakes. I have a business brain so it was a case of how to make enough money and create an income to go back to England with. Life in the UK can be tough if you don't have enough money especially if you have to start all over again.

Today, I have a very good business and now I can afford to go back home. I know what I'm going back to and I know what to expect.
I'm nervous because it can be difficult going back to a time and place that you've left but in my heart, it's my home I'm going back to, I'm not trying to reinvent the past.
The only difference is I am taking my new English husband back to his roots too which he left 48 years ago so that's scary.
We're both looking on it as a pilgrimage back to our heritage so at the same time it's scary and exciting.

Talk about life being a roller coaster eh?

Good for you, N!

That is so awesome that you "survived". I basically went through something similar in '94 with my first husband. However, in my case, I was stranded and broke in Martha's Vineyard, Mass. It was roughly a 9 hour trip (including a ferry) to my home so it was tons easier for me.

Enjoy! Enjoy! the rest of us will have to live vicariously through you. That seems to be the way I can ever enjoy the UK anyway these days with the kruddy $

It just shows that in any of life's sticky little plots and scenarios, you have to be very sure about what you want, make a plan and stick with it. I received my settlement in Nov 2006 so it will have taken me roughly 2 years to make enough money to go home.
Now it's just a waiting game. You know how you just sit around killing time? Hope it doesn't kill me with boredom first.

Is your business portable, Nadine, inasmuch as you can take it back "Home" and continue on with it there ??

Or will you have to close it before you leave ??

Designing business to be portable was always part of the plan Ron. I've got an online business based in the UK plus a physical business (same as) which I can just set up when I go home.

I made a plan, put it into practice and now it's all ready to go.

Wow!! sounds like one mega adventure.....EDBH, wishing you all the very best...and sending some homebase sunshine, blue skies, warm balmy nights down at the coast.....aaahh!! walks through lush green fields, over hills and breathtaking country views are all waiting for you....
I live between Northumberland and Durham, so I have the coastline, sandy beaches, scenic views and our history and heritage - all but a short ride....pure magic........Like my late Nan used to say 'Home is were the Heart is' Katie
