I looked at the UK cottages section and emailed a few places for our Christmas trip but they've come back saying they can't accommodate us in December. On looking at dates and availability, I've noticed that the season only goes from April to October.

Trust England to close for Christmas! Is there anywhere that stays open for self catering or B+B Dec-Jan? Should I organise a tent just in case?
If push comes to shove we could always knock on a stable door, what with it being Christmas, but I was kind of hoping for a en suited room.

If you spoke nicely to Ian, he MIGHT push the car outside and let you sleep in the garage

Don't try to keep up with "The Joneses". Bring them down to your level - it's cheaper.

I found a site that had a cottage - just googled "cotswolds", They were open in December but wow the price tripled for the week of Christmas. Went from £500 to£1400 for the week. Try www.visitbritain.com , they are always good for accomandations. Aboutbritain is still new for self catering so it's list is limited.

You could always try the Accommodation section of the magazine "This England".

"Beautiful Britain" could be worth a look too, possibly.

What a pity that "Lilliput" or "Punch" aren't still around.

Have you tried Yahoo-ing accommodation bureaux in relatively near centres but not actually in the area that you are seeking ?? Yeah, I know, of course you have.

Hi EDBH,

I think there are quite a few self caterings that open over Christmas, but as Marie says, they're dearer then because it's a very popular time (though much of the rest of December can be quite cheap).

Peak booking time for Self Catering is January, so it might be getting tricky to find availability in the most popular places at this time of year - but I'm sure there's still some availability out there.

We're scaling up the self catering section as fast as we can - we're adding lots of new properties every week to increase the choice. Right now we have 705 Self Catering properties and 1,300 B&Bs. Snag is we send them so many bookings, that sometimes they get booked up quite quickly.

Yes - we do have a couple of hundred campsites too - and the ones that are open in December will probably have availability... You'll just need a very warm tent

For cottages you could try one of the big agency websites - as they can provide an availability search where you enter your dates and destination, and it'll return only the properties with availability. For example, try:

Welcome Cottages

Hello everyone

Thanks for all the helpful tips. I've actually found some good deals on this web site just for anyone else thinking of travelling to the UK out of season, www.holiday-rentals.co.uk
