Virgil15 -> Help with a Xmas gift idea (2 Dec. 2006 19:21:53 )

My mother-in-law lives in America and is as proud to be from Britian as anyone is proud to be where they are from. I am trying to come up with an idea for a christmas gift that will really be special. Is there anything that she would really appreciate that would remind her of home? She is originally from Canterbury (sorry for the spelling).

Well what sort of thing would she like if she were home? Does she entertain here in the U.S.?, if so, I would recommend some purely British food stuffs with which she could impress her friends. I'm thinking clotted cream and scones or special teas, marmalade, other things she might not be able to get easily here. If you want something more lasting how about a beautiful piece of china or porcelain. That would be something she could display in her home.

How long ago was she last there?
Is she in contact with anyone there?

I agree with Merry - food stuff is a nice reminder. I have heard people complain that the tea here in states is not as strong as in UK. Find out what here favorite brand and flavor is.The British food stuff in markets in my area is very limited, so treats from home are always nice. A calender with pictures from Canterbury is something to enjoy for a whole year.

Hi there Virgil15,

If you are interested then I can put something "British" together for you and then send it off to your mother-in-law. It depends on how much you are willing to spend and if you can give me some idea of her interests then I should be able to angle it as specifically as possible. Please respond either to this message or better still my e-mail scott@positivelypostal.co.uk

Look forward to hearing back from you.

Scott.

Is she interested in board games?

Monopoly, the best selling board game in the world has just been given that personal touch. Instead of the Old Kent road and Mayfair in London you can now buy other cities/towns and even Counties. So you can build houses over an old school or sell the local train station, all the while trying to stay out of the local jail.

I see you say Canterbury is where she comes from, that is in the southern county of Kent. You can buy Kent county version.

What about a jar of marmite? Can't get anymore British than this.[:)] Or a hamper made up of foods you can only buy in England.
I live on the Gold Coast and found an english shop selling Kendal Mint cake would you believe. See post above.

Well vegemite was banned in the US a couple of months ago so I assume marmite is too.

Sure - get her a CD of the Last night of the Proms - or at least a collection of hymns with Jerusalem and I vow to thee my country.

That is, if she's English, and doesn't have that kind of stuff already.

eatdrinkbehappy -> RE: Help with a Xmas gift idea (7 Dec. 2006 22:11:00 )

That's interesting. Why is vegemite banned in the US?

Something to do with folic acid which I always thought was good for you.

They say you either love it or hate it, I guess the person who signed this was in the latter group.......MADNESS.[&:]

merry traveler -> RE: Help with a Xmas gift idea (8 Dec. 2006 17:26:50 )

If you scroll down the page of that article and read some of the reader's responses. You will see that it has not been banned in the U.S.

I wonder if this is just one of those urban myths that has cropped up in Australia and got reported as fact.

eatdrinkbehappy -> RE: Help with a Xmas gift idea (10 Dec. 2006 12:06:05 )

Well that's my point exactly. Marmite and vegimite are apparantly full of B vitamins so I could not see why it might be banned. I agree with you Merry, it's got to be a myth.

Ron Hann -> RE: Help with a Xmas gift idea (12 Dec. 2006 8:09:21 )

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Love the stuff.

Both Brands.

As a matter of interest, Vegemite was "invented" in Australia and current container-labels have a potted ([6]) history of its development since its inception in the 1920's.

Was Marmite developed in the U.K.? I've often wondered if the name is a corruption of the French Marmitte, a container of many types of food (I think)?
