Ian, that reminds me when we had an exchange school pupil from France and trying to amuse him.
Mhairi and the foster daughter were going on the trip and because there was a shortage of boys places, we were asked if we would take a boy as we had 2 boys in the family .
None of us spoke French and so the week looked bleak. Then I decided to go to the caravan in East Lothian and do the works.
Firstly was Dirlton castle which they all loved and then to the pub for lunch and onto the castle at North Berwick, Tantallon castle. That is amazing. It looks as if the fourth wall overlooking the sea has crumbled, but the rooms of the castle are inside the three walls. They all enjoyed that as well.
The next day we went to the Myrton(?) car musium near East Fortune. I bought them all the quiz sheets and had a good 2 hours peace and quiet while they tried to find the answers to such questions as "How many wheels has the 1941 **** trooper carrier has?". ok the answer is 6 road wheels and the spare and steering wheel. I had a prize for the winning score and consilation prizes for all the other 6 kids.
Then we were off to the East fortune Air Museium , where Concorde is now at, and it's a very" hands on" musium and the kids fair enjoyed it.
The next day, we took in the East Lothian Nature Trail. It was the day of the Under the Rocks. The Scouts showed us how to find living things under the rocks and pool beds in the Longniddrie shore, crabs, hermit crabs, prawns, mussels etc and we had a few hours hunting out our specimens.
By this time I was exhaused enteraining 7 kids bewteen 12 and 15 , and happyily drove them home, only to discover that the next day, our wee French guest had a birthday the next day. OK he did have a birthday party with all 50 French visiters plus the 51 Hostees.'in my house.
The next day was the trip back to France and of cource off went Mhairi and the foster child. What did they do with the family?
They went to a school football match that the wee french student was playing in........
It is obvious that East Lothian has a variety of different tourest interests.I would recommend everything that I've mention
Now to do West Lothian....
