I think that this has been covered before.

The British flag is, Officially, the Union Flag. To be strictly correct, it should only be called the Union Jack if it is being flown from the Jackstaff on a vessel - probably an R.N. one, at that.

Or so I read, some time ago, dunno where, though.

Yes, but why is it considered offensive when english people choose to fly one?

It is because of the most inane, and insane, phenomenon of our Modern Culture. It is called Political Correctness. And I use the term Culture in its very loosest sense.

Thou shalt not do, or cause to be done, or condone any other person to do or even think of doing, any action which will, may, possibly, perhaps, cause some real or imagined offence to some other person, race or creed.

In return, other races, persons and creeds are permitted, allowed, and even encouraged to perform any act which will, asssuredly, offend the resident of the Country to which this person has arrived, whether permanently or temporarily.

Does that answer your question???

The Union Flag is British the George Cross is english so at an english event the Union Flag should not be flown.

Its not racist but the BNP has been using the flag and sadly people see it as theirs.
Many people living in the UK come from countries where the Union Flag is seen as an oppressive symbol.

When england play Germany at football the George [english] flag should be used and not the British [Union] flag. The rest of the Union see it as arrogant that the Union Flag is seen by the english as theirs. Union and england being one and the same which it is not.

English don't think of the union jack as their own. In fact because of the rascist connotations most English don't even think of the union jack at all any more
