That good ol' classic, "Young Bess", was an afternoon movie today. Like always, it was watched and, like always, it got me to thinking about the Duchess of Somerset. Anne Stanhope was the second wife of Edward Seymour, the self-appointed Lord Protector for Edward VI...Henry VIII's longed-for heir. What happened to her after her husband was led to the scaffold with the help of the Duke of Northumberland? Yes...a 'google' search has been done, both in the U.S. and the U.K., but nothing was found...except the fact that she lived to the age of 90. That tells me she at least died in her bed. Please, what is her story...and can you point in the direction to find out?

For the sake, and edification, of the ignorant Colonial(s), were Edward and Jane Seymour related?

Yes...Jane Seymour was Edward's younger sister. When she married Hal 8, she brought the rest of her family to the heights [:D] When Henry gave her a son ([p]), then the ride to the stratosphere was completed.

Nope...Hal was in charge of the sex of his children. For Jane to give him a son, he had to give her one first....or at least plant the idea [:D] Interesting tidbit about Anne Stanhope...why was she Edward's second wife? Edward's first wife had an affair with his father [:o] The children Edward had with this first wife were then declared illegitimate, and the marriage was annulled. Needless to say, this caused a major rift in the Seymour family. But, once Janie Girl caught Hal's eye, all sins were forgiven.

Anne Stanhope remarried to Francis Newdigate and outlived him, with no children. (She had five with Edward and outlived most of those). Francis lived in Hansworth and was the steward to her late husband Edward. He died in 1581.She lived out her life in Shelford. She died 16 Apr 1587 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Marrying this steward was not like marrying a servant; the Newdigates (sometimes Niewdigate) was a noble lineage. There's also a village by that name in Surrey; "Newdigate" means "on the gate to Ewood" (yew wood), a forest park.

Thank you, thank you, Cal [p] She just vanished from the history books after Edward's death, so knowing the 'rest of the story' is fabulous. I guess she didn't make it to the court of Mary I...and no doubt that was a situation that suited her perfectly, knowing her religious leanings. To carry her story a bit further, as far as her children are concerned...didn't one of her grandsons marry Arbella Stuart? James I/VI (her cousin) sure didn't like that arrangement.
