Ye Olde Buffer -> Close encounters of the Ludlow kind - unexpurgated! (31 Jul. 2005 15:09:50 )

Now that I have my shiny new replacement laptop and it's setup is almost complete I felt that I had time to write this important missive. We met Anglo, as he has already said, at about 11 o'clock at The Feathers. After a very brief introduction we went off to the top of Broad Street to De Greys for some coffee. After swapping lurid tales of the About Britain forum members, under a strict oath of secrecy of course, [:@] we decided to have a look round Ludlow. Going down Broad Street we went through Broadgate, the only surviving medieval town gate, and went down to Ludford Bridge over the River Teme. This bridge is only one vehicle wide and no pavements so when we crossed we had to avoid being smeared along the parapet by large vans. Whilst on the bridge we saw a Heron standing down river looking hopefully into the water. On the other side we went up the path to Ludford Church. Nice little church but it reeked of mould which Anglo and I could smell but Amanda couldn't. From the church we went onto the footpath that runs along by the river at the lower edge of Whitcliffe Common. At the other end of the path we arrived at Dinham Bridge, the other of the two Ludlow bridges, which is just as narrow as Ludford Bridge but carries far less traffic. From here one can see the castle perched on it's rock high above the river. Across the bridge and up the narrow lane we arrived at Castle Square which is where we went into the Church Inn for lunch. I'm sure you'd all love to hear how Anglo drunk himself legless but unfortunately it didn't happen as he was driving. At some stage we looked at Ludlow Church but I can't remember if it was before or after lunch - must've been the fumes from Anglo's beer. Now that IS an impressive tower. I've not seen anything so large on another parish church. Talking of towers you may be interested to know that Anglo is at least 6 feet tall! (genuine fact number 1). [:o] All in all we had a pleasant time chatting whilst walking round looking at the sights. Oh yes, one other important point, I forgot to take any photographs of Anglo - honest. [:$] Once we'd set off from The Feathers the idea went clean out of my mind even though I had the camera slung over my shoulder (but then I always do). Ah well - next time then. When he was about to leave he let slip that he had to use the second best car while his wife drove round in the one with all the useful features. We know who's boss in that house then! (genuine fact number 2). I'm sorry to disappoint some of you but Anglo turned out to be a jolly nice chap. He does exist and doesn't have horns growing out of his head. I would hope to meet him again one day. Anyone else here been to Ludlow? I know Rosie hasn't as she doesn't go anywhere interesting and only stays there 10 minutes anyway. [6]
