Its been hilarious listening to the boys' chat this past 4 or 5 weeks in the local pub.

Nothing about football, politics, religion and sex etc....

Its all about lightness, texture ,glaze etc even for them , Scotsmen at that, to leave their pints o beer and wee halves of whiskey on the counter and to vanish for an hour and come back with their "Blue Peter" bag and say "This is the one I made earlier,well no earlier but a minute or more ago2 Then there is the sampling of their "just a minute or more made". and debate how good it is What are they talking about? What new toy have they just acquired?Its a ....

Bread maker!!

Yes they are wonderful machines. You just bung in the ingredients and press the buttons and a lovely fresh baked loaf is made.

But is it the top story of conversation? In my pub the noo it is!!

So ladies, if you want to follow the Livi trend, get a Breadmaker for hubbies christmas but don't forget the wee frilly pinny as a stocking filler

I got one of those things last birthday from my Daughter and Son-in-law....great-fun !

Yeah, I think that breadmakers are definitely a boys gift and not as some might suspect - a-little-wummin-in-the-kitchen-thingie ! ( Not sexist I hope )

You are having a larf aint you papa....making bread comes under the heading kitchen work and that aint got nowt to do with blokes. Don't get me wrong, I like the smell of fresh bread, but rolling all that dough and stuff is definately a womans job. Crikey if you start blurring the demarcation lines where will it all end...us doing the washing & ironing, seeing the kids are ready for school etc etc....what just what would be the purpose of having women around for if all that happens???

As for blokes chatting about domestic stuff in the pub....well I am lost for words. Stuff all that nonsense about baking bread, just stick to the usual football, sex (nice looker just walked past), football, other sport, football, sex again (another nice looker just ordered a drink at the bar), more football ......yunno the way it all goes. I reckon thats a great evening at the pub!!

Papaumau, one thing we could never do is call Anglo "biassed".

Also, I have suddenly noticed that your name is Papaumau, not -umu as I originally thought. I can't find any reference to that syllable, umau, in my book so will try to dig a bit deeper.

Hearty har har Gypsy !

You will find that I will do that quite a lot while I am here ! ( I hate to see guys stereotyped ).

Anglo....

Why I do it is to make sure that the wummin don't get too comfy in their secret societies !

I also do all of the machine-sewing in the house even although the wife is a professional machinist.

BTW....When you make bread with a breadmaker all you do is chuck in all the stuff and press a button. You can press a button can't you ?

Although I have to admit that when I am in the pub with the blokes I get very blokish, ( It's expected intit ? ).

What a fine fella of a man you look Papa but where are the bagpipes?

Anyway, Anglo, darling you have a problem. You are fast becoming a dinosaur with your views on who should be in the kitchen. Did you know that there are now far more famous male TV chefs than women? And here in Australia, it would almost be a hanging offence for the woman to cook the barbie. That's the Aussie male's territory. They are whizzes at using one hand to flip over the prawns and the other hand to reach for another can of Fosters from the eskie. If you don't know what an eskie is, it's like a huge cool box filled with ice to keep beer cool while entertaining outside.
Some houses here, especially the big old Queenslanders, have huge verandahs and most keep an eskie outside because life is lived outside.

Getting back to breadmakers, they are hot on a lot of peoples shopping lists at the moment but that diesn't surprise me. We've put up with that carboard tasting white sliced excuse for bread or far too long. I cook and it's wonderful to make fresh ciabatta.

And as for men and appliances Anglo, my son works in a very trendy wine bar and is known as the cocktail king (eat your heart out Tom Cruise) because he makes some pretty amazing concoctions. Personally I could never walk up to a bar and ask for a Horny Monkey (baileys, malibu and something else), I'd feel slightly uncomfortable and there are far worse titles but that's just one of the delish cocktails on offer.
Anyway, so much does he enjoy his part time job that's he just invested in a very expensive blender so he can practise his cocktail making even further.

Another popular appliance here is the George Foreman fat free grill. Anyone seen those? The idea is that it grills meat, chicken etc and the fat runs off into a tray below. Amazing to see how much fat comes out of even lean meat.

Anway, Anglo, we're somehow going to have to turn you into one of today's modern males. Got any ideas anyone?

I think it is time to hear from Mrs Anglo to get her side of things.

I have a George Foreman grill. I use it all the time - though the new one he has out has removeable grills for easier cleaning.

Thanks EDBH and Gypsy for the compliments !

I don't play the pipes...( not all Scotsmen can play the pipes you know ), but I did used to play the side-drum, ( snare ), in a pipe band. The trouble was that attending the band interfered with my chasin time - if you know what I mean !

Yes Anglo..I gotta agree with EDBH as all, thats ALL of the greatest chefs in the world are blokes. In fact, for some reason when a wumman does it she is called a cook

Mind you, because I am so big and ugly I can even get away with wearing pink shirts and stuff !

edbh, funny you should mention the George Foreman grill. I am looking for a part for one to fix one for a customer.

Do you happen to know anyone in the appliance-repair trade over there?

Ron, I don't know the answer. Maybe Hudson's link might help or try contacting the manufacturers. I know the grills are quite expensive but sometimes the parts are too. Good luck anyway.

I,ve got one of those George Foreman grills. They are fantastic,so much so,that when
our daughter asked us what we would like for Christmas,both of us replied in unison "a bigger George Foreman grill".

Argos is selling them at half price.

We have a large one, but I am interested in the new grills. The base comes out and they are easier to wash.

Anyone here who is concerned about eating healthy, has a George Foreman Grill. The latest version are in the shops now and they are much better in design so we'll be getting one soon. The sales start soon so I'll wait till then.
