Bolton Museum has many collections of exhibits from fine art to Egyptian archaeology. Among these is the Mass Observation archive, consisting of over 900 photographs taken in 1937 by photo-journalist Humphrey Spender. In the Egyptology Gallery is a 3000 year old mummy and many other treasures from ancient Egypt including original stone columns from the ancient city of Heracleopolis. The Museum has a frequently changing programme of exhibitions.

There is an aquarium which has a successful breeding programme for endangered species of fish. The Madagascan pin-striped Dambas (Paretroplus menarambo) are the first ever to have been bred in captivity.
