The Gallery will be in a period of extensive refurbishment from April to August 2006 as The 21st Century Face of Wolverhampton Art Gallery takes shape. The new extension is due to be completed in February 2007. Visitors are advised during this period to ring The Gallery before making a visit to avoid disappointment.
Established in 1884, Wolverhampton Art Gallery is an award winning hands-on art gallery situated in Wolverhampton town centre. The Gallery has substantial collections of both Contemporary Art and sumptuous displays of Victorian and Georgian paintings.
The nationally acclaimed collection of Pop Art works (one of the largest outside of London) will be displayed in a new landmark extension to the gallery opening in 2007. The new space will provide two unique triangular galleries in an extension to the present Victorian Grade II listed building.
A series of access initiatives has also won the Gallery a Gulbenkian Award for the best provision for people with disabilities in 1996, an Interpret Britain Award in 1997 and 'Best Museum of Fine Art' in 1998.
In the permanent exhibition 'Sensing Sculpture', visitors are encouraged to use sight, smell, touch and hearing to explore the exciting and diverse range of sculptures. The complete sensory experience allows for visitors to engage with works, as they never have done before.
Throughout the year there are a wide variety of fun-packed educational activities and workshops on offer at the gallery to engage visitors from all cultures, backgrounds and ages. Many workshops are free but booking maybe essential depending on the popularity of the activity. There is also a state-of-the-art multimedia suite offering a range of digital workshops for all abilities.
Due to building work, some areas of the gallery may be restricted. The café has been temporarily relocated to the ground floor with a reduced service, but still provides a wonderful selection of samosas, cakes and hot drinks.
There is also a gallery shop featuring work by craft-makers, books and postcards.
