The Windermere Steamboats and Museum has a unique collection of Lake Windermere's nautical heritage in a beautiful and tranquil lakeside setting.

Exhibits include:

  • 'Dolly', the worlds oldest surviving mechanically propelled boat with its original engine in working order
  • 'Esperance', Henry Schneider's 1869 steam yacht, the oldest on the Lloyds Register of Yachts and the inspiration for 'Captain Flint's houseboat' in Arthur Ransome's 'Swallows and Amazons'
  • Beatrix Potter's rowing boat which was recovered from Moss Eccles tarn in 1976
  • A World War II Slingsby Glider modified to take off and land on water
  • The original sailing dinghies 'Amazon' and 'Scarab' from the Ransome books
