Discover the fascinating story of china clay. In the 18th century prestigious porcelain companies competed to produce the finest china. Since then companies like Spode and Wedgwood have been buying china clay to make tableware fit for royalty.
Today the processing of china clay is Cornwall's largest industry, providing clay not only
for porcelain but for thousands of other modern products.
Set within the 26 acre site of two former 19th century china clay works, Wheal Martyn takes you through the story of production from 1800 to the present day.
There is plenty of variety for all the family in the form of two
trails. After visitng the brand new interactive gallery and display area take, the Historic Trail through the old clay works where you will see the largest working water wheel in Cornwall.Undercover exhibitions lead to the Transport yard, where a locomotive and railway stock are on display together with a 1916 Peerless
lorry and other historic vehicles used in the industry.
The Nature Trail leads through man-made and natural habitats to the spectacular pit-view where you can watch the workings of a modern china clay pit.
