After recent renovations the museum is now fully interactive and accessible to all members of the community. Explore the sights and sounds of the rainforest as you enter the world of Wakefield explorer and early conservationist Charles Waterton. Follow his journey through South America and see the unique collection of rare species that he preserved for future generations. Discover how he founded the world's first nature reserve.
Upstairs is packed with ephemera, photos and views of Wakefield exploring life in Wakefield from Romans through to modern day. There are plenty of opportunities for
you to get involved with the displays and discover how things work.
The latest technology with a digitalised photo imaging system allows you to take away prints of many of the objects on display - and many more that we are not able to display are stored for you to access.
The museum welcomes those with disabilities, facilities for wheelchair users and those with hearing and visual impairment. There are opportunities for schools, pre-schoolers and community groups to take part in talks and workshops using real museum objects, please telephone for details.
