High and low adventure at Poole's Cavern and Buxton Country Park.Poole's Cavern - Found deep beneath the limestone hills on the edge of the historic Derbyshire spa town of Buxton.
Dripping rainwater dissolving calcite crystals for thousands of years has created spectacular formations including the longest stalactite in the Peaks, crystal formations resembling frozen waterfalls and the unique 'poached egg' stalagmites.
Open the public in 1853, the early Victorian visitors explored the Cavern with candles and later gas lighting. Today, you are escorted in comfort and safety by expert guides who will unfold the fascinating story of the cavern's history, myths and legend.
The level cave paths are suitable for disabled access for part of the cave tour but there are only 25 steps throughout the whole cave journey. Contact us for disabled access information.
New facilities for summer 2007 will include a new visitor centre exhibition, restaurant with quality local produce on sale and gift shop.
Buxton Country Park is 100 acres of broadleaved forest rising above Poole's cavern to over 1400ft. Stroll through leafy woodland trails to the hilltop viewing tower with panoramic peak land scenery, a wonderful area for picnics and play.
This year visitors will have the opportunity to have a bird's eye view of the woods on the award winning Go Ape adventure high wire course through the tree tops.
