Plas Newydd is the traditional home of the Marquess of Anglesey. It was built in the 18th century by renowned architect James Wyatt. The elegant house on the banks of the Menai Strait commands magnificent views of Snowdonia.
In the 1930s the 6th Marquess of Anglesey commissioned the artist Rex Whistler to paint what was to become his largest painting in the dining room. More of his work can be seen in the permanent exhibition devoted to him.
The 1st Marquess of Anglesey commanded the cavalry during the 1815 Battle of Waterloo. In the Military Museum there are many fascinating relics including the first articulated wooden leg ever manufactured.
The Garden at Plas Newydd is one for all the seasons. In the spring there is the 5 acre Rhododendron Garden to enjoy which is accessed along a woodland walk along the banks of the Menai Strait. In the summer the terrace garden is an explosion of colour. The autumn brings golden colours and massed hydrangeas.
