Wanlockhead is Britain's highest village, sitting over 1500 feet up in the dramatic scenery of the Lowther Hills. At the Museum of Lead Mining visitors can explore the rich culture and heritage of Wanlockhead and its people. Discover "God's Treasure House in Scotland" where 300 years of Gold and Lead mining history are brought to life. The museum of lead mining has something for everyone, and offers unique learning opportunities for all ages.

  • View our superb display of rare minerals and mining artefacts, including working models of mining machinery. Relax in our tea-room and choose from a selection of unusual gifts in the museum shop.
  • Hard hats on, take a guided tour of a real lead mine. See and hear how the lead miners toiled underground.
  • Let your guide tell you how mining families lived and worked in Wanlockhead in 1740 and 1890.
  • Explore unique relics of a bygone industry by following the heritage trail. The Beam engine, original 17th century smelt mills, Miners' graveyard and Miners' Church are just some of the things it is possible to see.
  • Visit Scotland's second oldest subscription library est. 1756, containing over 3000 rare books.
  • Scottish Gold is amongst the purest in the world. The gold from the Mennock area is approx. 22.8 carats. The Scottish Regailia was created from gold panned locally.

    The Museum is open 7 days each week from 1st April to 31st October 11.00am - 4.30pm.

    In July and August open 7 days each week from 10.00am - 5.00pm.

    The Museum also opens between 10.00am - 5.00pm on major Bank Holiday (Easter etc.)

    Adult £5.50; Child £4.00; Concession £4.00; Family ticket (2+2) £17.50; Family (2+3) £21.50.
