The Imperial War Museum North tells the story of how war has shaped people's lives from 1900 to the present day. With the story still unfolding, the Museum will continue to develop and change over time.
The Building
Designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, the building has been created out of three ' shards' or pieces of a shattered globe to reflect the way war has devastated our world. The Air, Earth, and Water Shards represent war in the air, on land and at Sea.The Air Shard is a 55 metre tower which leans at 4 degrees, you can take a lift up to the viewing platform high above Trafford Park, Salford and Manchester. It is a wonderful experience for those with a good head for heights.
The Earth Shard, with its huge curved ceilings and floors, is the main public space of the Museum. On
Level One are the Main Exhibition Space and Special Exhibition Gallery.
In the Water Shard is the canalside Cafe where you can eat a full meal, a snack, admire the views across to the Lowry or take a moment to reflect on what you have seen so far.
During your visit make sure you see:
The Big Picture
See at least one Big Picture Show - it will be the highlight of your visit. The Big Picture is a large-scale audio-visual experience that you can walk through. It uses over 60 projectors throwing images onto 20 screens, some of them over 5 metres high and has a powerful soundtrack of personal stories. Each show lasts about 15 minutes and are shown hourly.General Information:
