Hunter House was home to John and William Hunter, famous medical brothers who were born and raised here in the 18th century. The story begins with their childhood years and ends with fame and fortune, their reward for discoveries that still affect modern surgery and anatomy today. Hunter House makes learning about medicine a fun experience. The museum is a fascinating combination of traditional and modern methods to describe anatomy and surgery in a way which especially interests children. A rural kitchen scene recreates the brothers' early days and the 'Hunters and Collectors' video explores the beginning of their careers.
The bodyworks area explains 18th century surgical practice and a lifelike body hides the answers to a series of questions. Touchable limbs and medical instruments will tell their story (with a few surprises) and an interactive CD-ROM allows you an exciting insight into the origins of modern medicine. In the large-screen theatre you can follow the Hunters' pioneering discoveries in medicine and the success which followed in an absorbing audio-visual presentation.
East Kilbride has changed dramatically since the time of its two famous sons, The new town display area explains how it developed as Scotland's first and most successful new town. This exciting story unfolds through a slide programme, photographs, local reminiscences and original objects relating to life in East Kilbride.
