Glenkinchie distillery, like so many others, was founded by farmers and is situated in a quiet hollow, surrounded by the fields which supply the barley for malting on site. Being so close to Auld Reekie, as Edinburgh is sometimes known, there are tens of thousands of visitors looking round every year. Set in rolling countryside perfect for growing barley, but a mere 15 miles from Edinburgh, Glenkinchie distillery was well placed to survive when recession closed many Lowland distilleries.
Distilling at Glenkinchie started in 1837, the distillery was reconstructed in the 1890s as a model Victorian operation, complete with houses for workers. A bowling green, which survives to the present day, was added in 1920.
Come and visit the distillery and see our exhibition, have a guided tour and then complete your experience with a taste of Glenkinchie 12 year old single Malt Whisky back at the bar.
