Fossil Grove is Glasgow's most ancient attraction. Its fossil trees provide an insight into the world of 330 million years ago.
The site represents a corner of an ancient forest preserved in stone. Eleven fossilised tree stumps still stand where they once grew. The fossils represent a group of extinct plants known as giant clubmosses. They grew in vast, swampy, tropical forests. Debris from these forests formed the coal seams that helped Glasgow grow into a major industrial city.
This famous site in Victoria Park was discovered in 1887. Excavation uncovered the fossils and a building was erected to protect them. Small displays provide information and interpret the site for visitors.
