Combe Abbey was founded by Cistercian monks in 1150 AD. Since then it has been through many changes culminating in an 83 bedroom hotel. The stables have been restored and became the Abbeygate, a superior banqueting suite housing the award winning Mediaeval Banquets.
There are beautiful historic gardens with a moat, formal bedding displays and an impressive collection of trees planted in Victorian times. Many wildfowl can be found here. A tranquil seating area, ideal for picnics and feedings the ducks!
The Duck Decoy Spinney was originally built to
provide fresh meat for the House, this area has an interesting mixture of habitats and attracts many different kinds of wildlife from bats to water beetles. A taprail has been installed for use by visually impaired people and a boardwalk gives the chance to get close to the wet woodland area. You can try pond dipping from the purpose-built stages - trays and nets can be hired from the Information Centre.
Wrautums Field is a grassed open area where there's lots of space for kick-abouts, kite flying and picnics.
A traditional wildflower meadow is a particularly pretty sight in summertime.
The Heronry and Protected Woodland area is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest because it is important for wildlife. Made up of excellent woodland and lakeside walks it is a hive of activity for bird and insect life. Specially built feeding stations give close-up views of winter wildlife and the bird hide provides spectacular views of the heronry and its occupants. Coombe boasts Warwickshire's largest and finest heronry, supporting over 50 breeding pairs of herons.
The Lake is
also part of the SSSI, it was originally designed as part of a Capability Brown landscape. It is now home to a wealth of wildlife and is an attraction all year round. Fishing for Bream, Roach, Pike, Perch, Zander and Carp is available at Coombe Pool.
