Brantwood was the home of John Ruskin from 1872 until his death in 1900 - it became an intellectual powerhouse and one of the greatest literary and artistic centres in Europe. Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, Marcel Proust and Frank Lloyd Wright can all be numbered amongst Ruskin's disciples.
Each year there is a vibrant programme of special exhibitions and events.
Brantwood enjoys the finest lake and mountain views in England and there is no other house in the district with such a diversity of cultural associations.
Explore the 250 acres of gardens, pastures, ancient woods and high moors. Walk among the beautifully scented azaleas and bluebells or marvel at the magnificent views. Stroll gently among the flowers of the lower gardens, walk vigorously to Crag Head or bring a book to enjoy under your favourite tree.
Do you know that rocks ring? Try your hand at playing a 21st century version of Ruskin's slate lithophone, on permanent display in the Linton Room at Brantwood. described by international percussionist dame Evelyn Glennie as "fascinating and intriguing".
