Devoted gardeners Wendy and Michael Perry had a clear mission when they set to work in the ramshackle two acres of ground at their home, Bosvigo House on the outskirts of Truro. They both yearned for a garden with summer in mind. They dreamt of a place filled with rare and unusual plants, a balance between the formal and informal and, because of the shape and contours of the grounds, a series of distinct gardens-in-a-garden.
In 1979 an ugly wing on the House was demolished leaving the charming Victorian Conservatory standing. Using the stone from the dismantled building a walled garden was created. Planted in calm purples, pinks and blues with stately Thalicrums, old-fashioned roses, Campanulas, Geraniums and Asters creating colour harmonies from June to the end of September. The conservatory is well over a hundred years old, the raised beds inside are planted with semi-tender climbers to give a suitably exotic atmosphere in the Summer. A splendid place to sit and relax.
The Hot Garden is a firework display timed to explode in August with orange Crocosmias, yellow Heleniums, red Salvias, Lobelia and flamboyant Dahlias, all held together with a tapestry of sultry dark leaved foliage. The Woodland Garden has a sinuous path winding through. In Spring, before the leaves come on the Beech and Sycamore, the area is carpeted with drifts of Snowdrops, Hellebores, Wood Anemones, Epimediums, Erythroniums and scented Narcissus.
A series of enclosed, cobbled Courtyards, planted with elegant Ferns, Hostas, Pulmonarias and Box topiary in pots connect the various gardens around the back of the House. All the plants sold can be seen growing in the Gardens. They are rare, unusual and hard-to-find varieties of Herbaceous plants. Most of them are fully hardy in Great Britain and advice is available. Please note there is no Mail Order service.
